About St. Chavara

St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara had a great vision on education in India. He acted with extraordinary courage to meet the challenges of his time. He insisted on opening schools attached to every catholic church, and entrusted the responsibility of building it up in tune with the needs of the time to the Catholic community. If today Kerala is the most literate state in India according to the (UNDP) measurement of human development index, St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara was a moving spirit behind this achievement. Through an integral person-oriented education he wanted to lay solid foundation for a life long process of growth in every human being towards a fully human and fully matured individual.

In tune with the spirit of its founder, the congregation of Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), with more than 3000 members, is today running 300 educational institutions in this country from Kanyakumari in the south to Poonch at Jammu and Kashmir in the North. In the beginning of 21st century the congregation has stepped into the field of medical college, and engineering college.

The CMI congregation is the embodiment of the dream and vision of St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara who was a nineteenth century educationist and social reformer in India. He was honored by the government of India by releasing a postal stamp in 1986 with his image.
